NRF The National Research Foundation (NRF) was established as an independent government agency, through the National Research Foundation Act (Act No 23 of 1998). The mandate of the NRF is to promote and support research through funding, human resource development and the provision of the necessary research facilities in order to facilitate the creation of knowledge, innovation and development in all fields of science and technology, including indigenous knowledge, and thereby contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of all South Africans.

YEBO funding

YEBO! is a three-year capacity building project on the internationalisation of doctoral studies in South Africa. It is funded by the Erasmus + programme of the European Commission.

Call for Proposals 2023 / 2024

The National Research Foundation (NRF) has embarked on a process designed to enhance and simplify the NRF administrative interface with Researchers.  This has been done by streamlining its application templates and its Call Opening process, in line with the forthcoming Research Support Strategies by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and the NRF.

Therefore, Research Office has pleasure in announcing the opening of the NRF One Call for 2023, which includes the following funding categories:

  • Thuthuka
  • Black Academics Advancement Programme
  • Competitive Programme for Rated Researchers
  • Competitive Support for Unrated Researchers
  • Support for Y-rated Researchers
  • DST/NRF Research Development Grants for New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) Scholars
  • Knowledge Interchange & Collaboration (KIC) 1

Note 2: Applications must be submitted electronically on the NRF Connect System at NRF Connect, unless otherwise stated in the General Application Guide.

Note 3: The Research Office will provide support to all applicants 1) in assist with informative session for these calls, 2) review and make inputs to your application to ensure an improved quality and competitiveness of applications.

Note 4: The Research Office will further send the internal informative session schedule for all the calls and closing date to all potential applicants.
