Steps in the Library Process
Planning:
Identification and development of a research topic
You need to define the topic or subject for your research. In order to ensure that you will not duplicate research already been done, it is important to establish in cooperation with the Faculty Librarian what research was already done in your particular field
Schedule an individual research consultation with the Faculty Librarian.
Find background information
Identify applicable keywords to support you in finding the most appropriate and applicable information.
Identify synonyms for the keywords by using synonym dictionaries
It is advisable to consult with your Faculty Librarian in establishing the keywords or subject terms applicable.
Establish who the experts and authoritative researchers in the field of your research are
In cooperation with your Faculty Librarian, establish by way of using the impact factors with regard to researchers and research publications, available on the ISI Web of Science, who the experts and authoritative researchers in your field of study are, as well as in which journals they had published their research findings.
Information Retrieval
The LIS has online access to a variety of e-resources. It is advisable to consult with your Faculty Librarian for:
* to identify the databases most applicable and relevant to your research topic
* Specialised Literature Search
* Database Training
Information Processing
Review and evaluate the information you had found - e.g. number and types of information, quality of articles and books
Consider revisiting the first steps - it may be necessary to find more recent, scholarly information that presents new perspectives
Organise and record information (Referencing) - You have to cite the information you use by using a standard format e.g. Harvard Method
The Research Commons is a dedicated space in the library for fully registered Masters and Doctorate students. It provides a peaceful atmosphere where researchers can access electronic resources and work on their thesis/dissertation.
It is located on Level 2 of the CUT Library.
If articles or books are not available on the full text databases or in the CUT Library, it can be ordered through the LIS Document Delivery Service, nationally or internationally. It is advisable to consult with your Faculty Librarian first before you order items via this service.
