Ask a librarian : How find prescribed books

How to find prescribed books

Finding prescribed books at the Central University of Technology (CUT) Library is straightforward. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1. Check the Course Materials

  • Course Outlines: Refer to your course or module outline, as it usually lists prescribed and recommended books along with their authors and editions.
  • Faculty Resources: Some faculties provide lists of prescribed books on departmental noticeboards or the faculty's website.

2. Search the Library Catalog

  • Visit the CUT Library website under your faculty/departmental libguide.
  • Use the library catalog search feature to locate books:
    • Enter the book’s title, author, or ISBN in the search bar.
    • Use keywords or your course/module code if the exact details are unavailable.
  • Note the call number (shelf location) and availability status.

3. Visit the Library

  • Use the call number to locate the book on the shelves.
  • If the book is on reserve (high-demand items), ask at the circulation desk or short-loan section. These books are usually available for limited borrowing periods, for example, two hours and  on-site use.

4. Online Resources

  • eBooks and Databases: Some prescribed books might be available as eBooks or digital resources. Check the library's electronic resources section or ask the library staff for guidance.

5. Consult Your Lecturer or Librarian

  • Lecturers: Confirm with your lecturer if the prescribed books are available in the library.
  • Librarians: Library staff can assist you in finding and accessing prescribed books.

6. Borrow or Use On-Site

  • Once you locate the book:
    • Borrow it using your student card (loan periods may vary).
    • If it's a short-loan or reference book, use it within the library.

7. Alternative Options

  • If the library doesn’t have a copy, ask about possibility for the library to purchase the copy or purchase your own copy from booksellers  or online retailers.
